Map depicting the Naval battle of Chesme.
    Diakov 153.1
AU. Glossy medium brown surfaces. A very impressive medal.
Some flan flaws near rims, which is not unusual for this issue.
The naval Battle of Chesme took place on 5 - 7, July 1770, during the Russo-Turkish War, 1768 - 1774, near and in Chesme Bay, in the area between the western tip of Anatolia and the island of Chios. It was a part of the Orlov Revolt of 1770, and the first of a number of disastrous fleet battles for the Ottomans against Russia.
Count Orlov, featured on the obverse, is an important figure in Russian history. He personally strangled Tsar Peter III, which placed Peter's wife Catherine on the Imperial Throne. To reward him for his deed, Catherine promoted him to Lieutenant General, Chamberlain and Chancellor.
