About the Book
~ The book is mostly about Clocks, with a chapter about Watches.
"The author.....has drawn together the threads of the last 200 years of the clockmaker's art, following the family dynasties, and the influence of their designs, as they fanned out from the important centers in Philadelphia, Boston, and Connecticut into all the colonies and finally into the early and late frontiers. He discusses in depth the great artists and innovators of the handcrafting era: men such as David Rittenhouse and Simon Willard; the forerunners of manufacturing: Thomas Harland, Daniel Burnap, and the Cheyneys; and, finally, the inventive manufacturing geniuses: Eli Terry, Chauncey Boardman, and Silas Hoadley.
The clocks themselves are discussed in their various designs and styles in relation to their makers ~ brass and wood clock movements, tall clocks, shelf clocks, wall clocks, the banjo clock, the mirror clock, and later variations, including marine clocks, calendar clocks, precision clocks, and electric clocks.
A section on components illustrates how a timepiece is assembled and how it functions; and there is a Glossary of terms. A final chapter traces the history of the watch and its makers in America."
